Over the last few years thanks to local activism and public outcry, Goan mines have been shut on court orders but not without consequences. The silt from these unattended mines chokes the rivers causing massive damage to marine life and crop farming in the region. An alternative to the current scenario is to rehabilitate these sites, not only for the ecology but also to generate income for the local populations that have seen job loses in the recent past, as well as, create fertile landscapes to further farming in the region bringing the ecosystem back to life.
